Milestone Memoir is my vision of marrying one picture (worth 1,000 words) with one personal essay (250 words) to create a meaningful narrative for future generations.
In literary circles, Memoir is considered to be one particular aspect of your life rather than a comprehensive overview. And as I indicated last week, each of us have numerous memoirs we could write.
For example, one idea I have is to recount my mother’s life from my perspective. A possible title could be: I Learned How to Live by Watching My Mother Die.
Something happened when I turned fifty. I realized I have lived more life than I have left, which creates an urgency to capture those memories before my failing mind loses them completely.
But how do we do that? How do we sift through all the experiences and select ones with meaning to share with our loved ones? Where do we even begin?
Sometimes all it takes is a visit to a local Flea Market. I am always surprised to find momentos of my childhood selling as antiques(?!) But those trinkets begin an avalanche of memories that I can tap into. Keep a notebook handy and write down any ideas that come to mind.
Most might refer to this recipe as Refried Bean Dip or perhaps Mexican Layer Dip. But in our family, this is fondly referred to as Martha Dip.
I am a Texan through and through. In fact, in doing some family genealogy, I discovered I am four generations Texan on my mother’s side. I grew up on Tex-Mex food before it became popular.

Revising Life after 50
